ACADEMIC ACTIVITIES

Welcome to the 2nd issue of our weekly newsletter. In this issue I will highlight some of the academic activities going on in the school, the upcoming Parents Coffee Evening as well as other news..

ACADEMIC MATTERS

Today brings another busy week to an end for both teachers and students at this school. The Schools first major assignment for the first half of this term was given to the students on Monday of this week. All students in the Middle and High School should have with them topics of  their major assignment The due date for the final copy of the assignment to be handed in by the students to the respective teachers will be week 4 Friday 27th / 02/09.

Parents who have resources like books or access to internet and computer Encarta programs are asked to help the students in their effort to get their assignments completed. It is all in the interest of our students. This not only helps students with marks for their assessments but also their ability to carry out independent research in different areas of studies. Apart from the major assignment, subject teachers have started giving classroom tests, extended homework exercises and started collecting marks for assessment.

 GRADE 11 STREAMING

Teachers have also this week had discussions about the possibility of streaming Grade 11,s into their respective subject combinations beginning as early as next week. The school will take into consideration parental views, students Grade 10 School certificate achievements as well as the students interest in order to place students into their respective subject combinations. Should there be any parents who would like to discuss this matter with us , you are most welcome to do so.

Academic subjects in which students will be streamed into include those in the Humanities strand , History, Geography, Economics, Business Studies and Mathematic B and the Science strand that is Biology, Chemistry, and Physics and Mathematic A. All students will also be taking Language & Literature, Sports Health and Fitness and Computer Graphics. Tourism and Hospitality is optional and can be taken by students in the Science stream as well as those in the Humanities stream.

 ELC AND JUNIOR SCHOOL NEWS

Learning in the ELC is continuing well. There were some changes to the classroom allocation for the Grade 2,s last week as a way of preparing the Grade twos to move into Grade 3. They are now under the guidance of Miss Kereka together with the grade 3,s in the Junior School classroom . Children in Play School up to Grade 1 are with Mrs. Kelaga and Miss Barnabas in the ELC classroom. There were still some teary eyes this week with one or two hesitant children trying to settle into the routines of schooling. Hopefully, as time goes on and with new friends they should forget about mum and settle in for school work.

Children numbers in the Junior School section this week has gone up to 53 . There is every possibility that it may go up to 70 and which we might consider to put a stop to the enrolment in that section. Parents who are still thinking of schools to enroll your children , this week might be your only chance to bring in your children as by next week we would not be able to guarantee you a space in the Junior School. Learning for the first two weeks in this section has been good and we are looking forward to the year ahead of us.

Those students especially in Grades 9 and 10 who enrolled late this week are reminded to check the notice board or you could also see Ms. Duma and put your name in one of the clubs that is being offered. The following clubs are currently being offered by teachers. Food Processing & Preserving Mind Games Beautification Scripture Union Art & Craft Music It is a compulsory afternoon activity and all students in the affected grades are required to enlist into one of the club activity indicated above.

DEBATE & QUIZ

Our Wednesday afternoons are usually devoted to quiz and debate activities. For this week a debate was scheduled for the teachers however, due to the late announcement of the topic, one group from the teachers debating team was not prepared and so the debate was postponed to Week 3. They should be better prepared for week 3 and we are looking forward to a fiery start to our debating and quiz schedule. The topic to be debated on is “ Same sex parents should be given the same rights for adoption as heterosexuals”. We hope this topic would not bring controversies.

VICTORIA BUSH FIRE TRAGEDY

Disasters does not determine whether a country is developed or is developing or whether it is a third world or a first world country. It strikes and leaves unhealed wounds and scars. Families have died in cars in their attempt to get away from the fire, children have died in their attempt to find their parents Man and women have died in trying to save their pets and animals. These are ordinary people who lost their lives To all those whose loved ones have perished in the fire our hearts and thoughts goes out to you and we hope such tragedy will not happen again in the future.

Have an enjoyable weekend Mr. Huanaromo (Principal)
