ACADEMIC ACTIVITIES

Welcome to the 3rd  issue of our weekly newsletter. In this issue I will highlight more on academic activities in the school, the recently held Parents Coffee Evening as well as other news.

ACADEMIC MATTERS

Today brings another busy week to end for  teachers and students at this school. This week students in the Middle School and the High school were frequenting the Library and the Computer lab to work on their major assignments.  All the first draft of the assignment should have been due in for marking last week. Any student who is yet to give in your first draft to be corrected and commented on should do so immediately. For those students who came in late and were given the assignment late to work on, please liaise with your subject teacher and try your best to hand in the drafts and the final copy on time .The second draft should be due in for marking this week while the final copy is due on Friday of Week 4. All students are asked to observe the time schedule and work on your assignments accordingly. With the improvement in the IT facilities our students are also now enjoying faster internet access and have improved research access on the different topics they are working on.

In other academic news, teachers have started giving classroom test, extended homework and other assessment tasks to the students. As a way of improving and maintaining transparency in the collection of marks for our students, each Section Head has drawn up progressive assessment charts and are updating the chart every time an assessment task is marked and recorded. Teachers who have yet to collect marks for their subject are facing the barrel of a blank progressive table and will work on collecting marks through continuous assessment tasks for the next 7 weeks. This term we are expected to collect at least 100 marks for our assessments and so all teachers and students must work towards that score.

GRADE 12 INTERVIEWS

Late last week and through out this week the grade 12,s have been busy interviewing different sectors within the town community  and are compiling reports and doing presentation of their interviews this week. We are looking forward to some of their presentations during the whole school assembly today.

 ELC AND JUNIOR SCHOOL NEWS

ELC

Children numbers in the ELC section (Grades Play—1)  has steadily increased up to 55 as of today's count. With their two teachers, Mrs. Kelaga and Miss Barnabas, they have settled in and are now learning new things. This week the Play and Pre School children were coloring different animals and tracing numbers from one to nine. Most of them have leant to hold the pencil correctly and  are also working on identifying colors with common objects and animals.

A reminder to parents and guardians to make available a handkerchief to the children for personal health and hygiene reasons. We would also like to encourage parents to pack enough food for your child's lunch and at least some fruits as a way of maintaining balance in their eating habits.

JUNIOR SCHOOL

The Junior School teachers and children have also been busy this week. The Grades 2 and 3 have made a routine of singing the national anthem , the school song and saying the Pledge every morning from 8:00—8:15. Such routines help to instill national pride in our children. The Grades 4 & 5 have been learning about different words and their associated sounds and have been practicing these in the mornings. Apart from that they have been learning about plant science and have been naming parts of plants and their functions. Generally, learning has picked up this week and we look forward to Week 4.

OTHER NEWS

COFFEE EVENING 1 2009

On Wednesday this week(18/02/09)  we had our 1st Coffee Evening for this year. As indicated by the turn out of parents and guardians for the occasion it was a success. Most parents who came spoke highly of the schools academic achievements and teachers efforts put in educating the children of this school. Some parents also queried about the academic and behavioral performances of their children and were informed accordingly by the teachers. We acknowledge all those parents who turned up for the evening and we look forward to seeing you again in our 2nd Coffee Evening which will be in August.

BUS PICK UP & DROP OFF SERVICES

We will continue to provide pick up and drop off services to our children, however, due to the increase in our student numbers and the timing that it will take for picking up and dropping off every one on time, we have decided for an alternate arrangement which would include about 15 pick up and drop off points for our children. Parents and Guardians are asked to drop off and pick up your children at those points so that we can serve every body on time. We ask for your cooperation in this regard and ask that pick ups should be on time at those points to collect your child/children.

 DEBATE AND QUIZ

Our debate and Quiz session this week was affected again by the preparation in the Middle school classroom for our Coffee Evening  on Wednesday. We however, will definitely have the teachers debate next week on a new topic. The previous topic created some  controversies before it was actually brought to the debating floor and has to be changed to gather for good wider opinion  when it is debated on. The Mathematic and Science Teachers have previously taken out the first debate and we hope history will repeat itself again on the debating floor come next week Wednesday

        VICTORIA BUSH FIRE

Last week Friday we ran an appeal for cash donations in regard to the Victoria Bush Fire. We received very good generous donations from our children in all grades and have sent the money on Friday to the Australian Red Cross Society who are coordinating the relief appeal.

Altogether a total of K 463.00 was collected.

From the children's donation the school donated K500 bringing a total of K1000 which when converted should be about A$500. Thank you all for your donations for this worthy cause. We've asked Red Cross Australia for this money to be directed towards children use.

Once again thank you.

Have an enjoyable weekend Mr. Huanaromo (Principal)
