ACADEMIC ACTIVITIES

Welcome to the 5th issue of our weekly newsletter. In this issue I will highlight the academic activities in the school, as well as other news.

 Academic Matters

This is the last week of the 1st batch of the major assignments for this term. Students in the Middle and the High School section should  give in their final copy of the assignments to the respective teachers for marking. For those students who have enrolled late and have yet to complete the assignments, please see your respective subject teachers in regard to late submission and time extension. For those students who have started classes as of Week 1, there should be no excuses and we expect all assignments to come in for marking today.

The topics for the second patch of the major assignments for Weeks 6-10 will be given on Monday by the respective teachers and the assessment coordinator. Please check the notice board and your respective teachers on Monday for your assignment topics.

On other matters, this week was the 5th week of classroom learning at this school. Assessment in all subjects and classes is progressing smoothly . As was mentioned in the previous newsletters, at least 100 marks will be collected for all subjects this term  and we encourage all students to come to school every day. Those students in the examinable grades this year (Grades 8, 10 and 12 ) must make it their responsibility to attend all classes. Students who missed tests and assignments without good reasons are awarded 1 or 2 marks below the lowest  mark in the class, thus a bright student who misses tests and assignments as such will really affect his/her overall internal marks. For those students who missed classes for genuine reasons we would very much appreciate if the parents or guardians could let the class teacher or the school administration know of his/her absences through a written note. We would also request for parents and guardians to encourage your child to read more books. In this age of television and computers our children tend to forget about books and rely solely on such things as the Encarta programs and the Internet for their research work. Books still have more information and reading helps to exercise the brain as well as to absorb information.

Early Learning Center (ELC) & Junior School News

ELC

The children in the ELC are grouped into two groups. The Play School and the Grade 1 children are taken care of by Ms. Barnabas while the Grades Play, Pre Prep are looked after by Mrs. Kelaga. Throughout this week the Play, Pre, and Prep children were learning reading skills in their Language lessons. As it is part of their learning children are asked to read simple stories to their friends in the classroom. Obviously some children may have difficulties reading or they may not feel happy to read in front of their friends. These are only part of learning and we would like to encourage parents and guardians to make use of the second hand shops and buy simple story books and read to your children. I'm sure this will help a lot in their learning.

  JUNIOR SCHOOL

The Junior school section has been busy as  always. In their language lessons the Grades 2 & 3 have been learning about countable and uncountable nouns. This morning they  were doing handwriting when the writer caught up with them .

The Grades 4 and 5 have been learning and doing exercises on shapes and the calculation of the perimeter of shapes in their Mathematic lessons. In the Society and environment lesson  they were studying about plants and their importance to the environment.

They have also been visiting the computer laboratory for their computer lessons and are looking forward to the next computer lesson  next week.

LC AND JUNIOR SCHOOL NEWS

ELC:

Children numbers in the ELC section (Grades Play—1)  has steadily increased up to 55 as of today's count. With their two teachers, Mrs. Kelaga and Miss Barnabas, they have settled in and are now learning new things. This week the Play and Pre School children were coloring different animals and tracing numbers from one to nine. Most of them have leant to hold the pencil correctly and  are also working on identifying colors with common objects and animals.

A reminder to parents and guardians to make available a handkerchief to the children for personal health and hygiene reasons. We would also like to encourage parents to pack enough food for your child's lunch and at least some fruits as a way of maintaining balance in their eating habits.

OTHER NEWS

SAUSAGE SIZZLE

Last week Friday 27/02/09 the school celebrated another milestone in its short history.  During the early part of the week the school enrolled its first ever 250th student. This was in itself an achievement as the school has not in previous years enrolled students over that mark. To mark that achievement , there was a sausage sizzle at recess time with a reduced price. The ELC ,s were charged 50 toea whilst students in the Junior school to the High School  were charged K1.00 with  the hotdogs all sold out at recess. The 250th student was Bobby Taka in Grade 11 and we wish Bobby all the best in his studies at this school.

BUS PICK UP & DROP OFF SERVICES:

Our bus pick up and drop off service  this week was carried out according to the tickets given out to the students for those who have paid in advance.  If any parent and guardian has paid in for this week you should make sure that you pay in for the next week so that your child will continue to be picked up and dropped off. As I have stated last week we will not accept cash payment by students on getting on or off the bus, so please make every effort to pay in advance  either weekly, monthly, termly or you can even pay for the whole year and leave your child pick up and drop off  for the school to take care of while you concentrate on other business.
