Academic Matters
This week marks the 7th week of continuous classes for students at Goroka Grammar School. On Wednesday, students had a non– contact day of classes and stayed home. Teachers, though were at work working on the End of term 1 student reports. Normal classes resumed on Thursday with most students coming on time, thought it was wet and raining.
The topics for the second major assignment for the Middle and the High School students have already been given out to the students and the topics pinned up in the classrooms by the assessment coordinator . Also respective teachers have notified the students about the topics and all students should aim to complete the assignment by the end of Week 9. Teachers have also started compiling questions for the end of term 1 examination for all Grades. These examinations will be held in Week 10 and we encourage students especially those in the Middle and the High School to spend time on weekends to revise for the examinations. Students who miss classes during this time of the term will miss out on assessment marks in different subject areas. To avoid inconveniences of missing test we encourage students to come to school every day. A reminder to students, parents and guardians that any student who missed an assessment without any good reason will be given 1 or 2 marks below the lowest score in the class. For students who miss out on an assessment task with a good reason he/she will be given an average mark depending on the marks in his/her previous assessment. At this school we do not give tests especially to students on the next day because of the chances of questions being discussed by the students after a test has been done.
The ICAS examinations for this year is on again. Registration is still open for students in Grades 3 up to Grade 12 to take part in this examination. The closing date for all registrations is the 31st of March 2009. Our students will take part in the following subject areas; English, Mathematics, Science and Computing. Over the years our students have been doing well in this academic competition and we encourage more students to take part. The registration fee per student per subject is K5.00. Please see Rose at the school office to register.
Early Learning Center (ELC) & Junior School News
Starting Monday this week we started dropping off the ELC children separately from the Junior School and the Middle School children. This has greatly reduced overcrowding in the big bus and we will continue to stick to the same arrangement for this year. In the mean time I would like to encourage all parents and guardians to pay the pick up and drop off fees in advance at the school office so that your child will continue to get on the bus. For a number of days this week we have to collect names of children who have no bus tickets but have to be dropped off because the pick up are not here. If you know that you have not paid pick up and drop off fees for you child, please come on time and pick them up after classes so that they will not be left stranded in the school.
On the academic front the ELC and Junior School children have been good this week. The ELC's will be bringing home their homework in their folders. Please assist them to complete their tasks. They will also be bringing some library books to read at home and we encourage parents and guardians to also help them to read at home.

LC AND JUNIOR SCHOOL NEWS ELC: Children numbers in the ELC section (Grades Play—1) has steadily increased up to 55 as of today's count. With their two teachers, Mrs. Kelaga and Miss Barnabas, they have settled in and are now learning new things. This week the Play and Pre School children were coloring different animals and tracing numbers from one to nine. Most of them have leant to hold the pencil correctly and are also working on identifying colors with common objects and animals. A reminder to parents and guardians to make available a handkerchief to the children for personal health and hygiene reasons. We would also like to encourage parents to pack enough food for your child's lunch and at least some fruits as a way of maintaining balance in their eating habits. |
DEBATE
Our debate and quiz programme this week was affected due to the non– contact day for the students on Wednesday. This means that the Quiz programme that was scheduled for this week is now rescheduled to Week 9. The Grade 9’s are relieved that it is postponed so that they can prepare for it next week. The Grade 11’s debate is also further rescheduled to week 9. This should also give the Grade 11’s enough time to prepare on the topic and we are looking forward to an entertaining debate come week 9.
IT NEWS
The IT section in the school is currently working on producing Identification Cards for all the students in Grades 6 to 12. As of this morning ID cards for the Middle School students were completed. The lab technicians should be able to laminate all the cards by next week and issue it to the students. This should help the students in situations where they have to identify themselves. On other news, students internet access in the IT lab at the moment is good, and we encourage students to use the internet for research purposes only. Some students have already had their passwords disabled due to improper use of the internet for personal reasons. The IT technicians have been instructed to continue to disable any student passwords who misuse the internet to access prohibited sites on the web. If you are one of those students you will have to wait until your password is reinstated to use the internet. Continuous misuse will result in the ban being imposed on you.
SPORTS
FRIDAY SPORTS
Our sports programmme last week Friday was again disrupted due to the continuing rainy condition. The NSI staff informed us that the grounds was water logged and was not suitable for use. For this week we will have games of basketball and volley ball for the High School and the Middle school students at the respective courts at NSI. This will not affect the grounds and we will inform you of the outcome in the next issue of the newsletter.
SCHOOLS SOCCER COMPETITION
The schools soccer competition was also postponed last week to this weekend. Schools were supposed to start the proper rounds however, due to the condition of the field we were unable to start the proper rounds last weekend. This weekend’s game will go ahead as scheduled, subject to weather conditions. At this school we will continue to have training for the students on the scheduled days and times for the respective divisions.
The next major event for the school is the Cross country which will be held on Friday 27th march 2009. This year will be the third year in running for the cross country. Students will take part according to the three school sections in the school. This include the Junior School, the Middle School and the High school sections. In previous years we have had good participation by our students and we expect the same this year. We are also encouraging parents and guardians to come in and take part with us. We will be giving medals for the first three runners for each section and certificate of participation for all students who complete their route accordingly. The Junior School children will make two laps around Garden street and finishing at the school. The Middle school students will run from the school, up Mt. Kiss road via, police barracks , down towards Raun Raun theatre and to the school. The High School students will run 2 laps round the police barracks route before finishing at the school.
Have an enjoyable weekend Mr. Huanaromo (Principal)
