Academic Matters
This is the end of week 8 for classes at Goroka Grammar School. Assessments for this term are winding down and we are looking forward to the end of term examination and the completion of the second major assignment for the term. The final draft of the second major assignment is due in next week Friday and all students are frequenting the computer lab to work on their assignments. Those parents who have access to computers at home are encouraged to allow your child to spend some time over the weekend on the computers to get their assignment completed. During class times in school , it is hard for students to spend good time to work on their assignments. As such they should be given time off over the weekend to complete their assignments. In week 10 all students from the Junior School up to the Grade 12 will be doing their End of term examinations. The marks obtained from these examinations will be carried forward to their assessments in term 2. It is important that students are prepared well to sit for these examinations.
The ELC’s will also be given mini tests to see how they have come through in terms of their learning this term. Generally, week 9 will be short in terms of formal classes as we will have the school cross country on Friday . A dead line has also been set for all teachers to get all the examinations ready by next week Friday 3rd/ 04/09. At the same time teachers are also compiling the final reports for students for term 1 and all these should be bound and ready for distribution to the parents during the End of Term 1 closing assembly. The End of term examination schedule should come out early next week for the students to observe and do their studies accordingly
Early Learning Center (ELC) & Junior School News
ELC
Student numbers in the ELC section has increased to 60 through out this term. This has prompted us to take in a new teacher, Mrs. Kiri to help Mrs. Kelaga and Miss Barnabas. Mrs. Kiri has been a long serving teacher with the state schools. She brings with her more then 10 years of teaching experience which should be a bonus for our children’s learning. With the aid of Miss Turi there are now 4 personal looking after the ELC section.
Junior School
The Junior school children have been busy this week. The Grades 4 and 5 have been working on a project on International relations and are researching on some of our neighboring countries. Parents are asked to help them in their research work so that they can be able complete it on time.
The Grades 2 and 3 have been learning about time and clock faces when the writer caught up with them. We therefore encourage parents to help them at home.

LC AND JUNIOR SCHOOL NEWS ELC: Children numbers in the ELC section (Grades Play—1) has steadily increased up to 55 as of today's count. With their two teachers, Mrs. Kelaga and Miss Barnabas, they have settled in and are now learning new things. This week the Play and Pre School children were coloring different animals and tracing numbers from one to nine. Most of them have leant to hold the pencil correctly and are also working on identifying colors with common objects and animals. A reminder to parents and guardians to make available a handkerchief to the children for personal health and hygiene reasons. We would also like to encourage parents to pack enough food for your child's lunch and at least some fruits as a way of maintaining balance in their eating habits. |
Quiz
This week Wednesday we had a quiz between the Grade 9 students. The presenters of the quiz were Iamo Nou and Melinda Kurupo from Grade 11. Generally, the organization and the presentation was good and we expect future presenters to follow the same. Students competed in their house colors in answering 4 questions each from different academic subjects.. The overall winner of this week’s quiz was the Flemming with 27 points, Moore with 18 points, Nightingale with 13 points and Moore with 8 points. The next quiz will be competed between the Grade 12 Humanities students and will be held in term 2. Next week , we will have a debate between the Grade 10 students on the topic “ There should be a curfew for people under 18 years to reduce crime in PNG”. It is a good topic and we are looking forward to a heated debate between the Grade 10 students as there are some good debaters in that Grade.
IT News
Our internet access this week was slightly slow when students logged on to the internet. This is due to technical problems associated with Telikom PNG . In the mean time students are continuing to use the Encarta programs to search for information to work on their assignments.
